Year 5 & 6 Sports

Selwyn House is excited to offer a variety of sporting opportunities and activities for Year 5 and 6 students in 2024.

At this stage we are looking to run the following sports in 2024 for Year 5 and 6 students:

Term 1 – Futsal, Summer Hockey, Touch, Triathlon, Water Polo, Tennis, Fencing

Term 2-3 – Thursday Winter Sport (see below for more information) – Hockey, Netball, Football, Also, Duathlon (Term 3), Basketball, Fencing,

Term 4 – Futsal, Summer Hockey, Touch, Water Polo, Fencing, Tennis

There is a chance that the options for sport may change as we move through the year, either more sports added, sports extended, sports no longer available due to insufficient numbers.

Details for each forthcoming term’s sporting opportunities, including practice times, game schedule, estimated costs etc will be sent out via the Newsbrief and/or through a School Apps alert in the last couple of weeks of the preceding term.

SELWYN HOUSE SPORTS

Registration for all school-based programmes will be done through an online registration form below and fees are paid through the students’ accounts. Registration fees are usually not refundable after the second week of the programme. If any of the girls wish to withdraw from a programme after registering, an email must be sent to confirm that they will no longer continue.

Terms 2-3 Thursday Winter Sport

In the winter terms, it is mandatory that all students in Years 5-8 select a sport to play in the Primary Sports Canterbury Thursday competition.  All teachers in Years 5-8 will be with a sports team in Terms 2-3 during the afternoon sports block (12:30-3:30pm).

Winter Sports Trials

  • Year 5-6 Thursday 28 March; 1:30-3:30pm
  • Year 7-8 Thursday 4 April, 1:30-3:30pm
  • Thursday 30 May (week 4 of Term 2) – Winter Sport begins and continues until 29 August

Games are played from 1:15-2:15pm at either Hagley Park (Netball and Football) or Nunweek Park (Hockey). We depart by bus at 12:30 and will be back at school around 3pm.

Aerobics

Years 5-8 Aerobics Club – We are excited to introduce a new aerobics club for any students in Years 5-8.

Fencing

Girls can train at fencing from Year 4+. They will receive training in fencing technique and fitness both as part of the group and individually. The coaches provide systematic training to develop each fencer to their full potential. Fencing promotes good hand, eye coordination and mental preparation. It also promotes social interaction in a sporting environment. Girls are taught to offer constructive advice to each other while fencing. Fencing is one of the three sports that have been an Olympic sport in every Olympic Games.

Fencing Sessions in Term 2: Either Tuesdays (Year 5) or Fridays (Year 6) 3:45pm to 4:45pm in the Selwyn House Atrium.

Cost: $160.00 for the term. There is an additional charge of $25.00 for gear hire as masks cannot be shared, or $15.00 if students have their own mask. Total cost = $185 or $175.

There is also a $50.00 charge for all new participants to buy a new glove. If any students would like to buy a mask, please contact Leasa.
